Big, small and beautiful Croatian islands
Croatia is most known among the travelers and tourists for its islands than anything else. There is hardly an aspect of travel and tourism for which these islands do not provide the scope. The longest of the Adriatic islands Hvar is 68 Kms long and rises to 628 meters above the sea level.
The architectural monuments and the ancient theater hall make it a favorite for historians and research scholars. The island is well communicated with ferry services from Split, Jelsa and Stari Grad and has large hotels for accommodation of the visitors.
With a population of around 8.000 the Pag Island is a conglomeration of 24 islands. The island is extremely rocky. Its highlight is the Pag cheese. The largest towns in this island are Pag, Novalia and Lun. Another large island in Dalmatia is Korcula. Tourism is the main industry and means of livelihood for most of the 18,000 local inhabitants. The coastal towns of Korcula, Lumbarda and Vela Luka and inner towns like Zrnovo. Smokycia and Blato all have most of those attractions that are liked by the tourists.
Dugi otok has a population of around 3,000 in ten towns and villages. The highest peak Vela strazza has a height of 338 meters. Vineyards, olive plantations and agriculture are the main occupation of the people. Sali is the main township having some fine hotels.
The greenest island in Adriatic is Mljet that has a population of 1300 and contains the national park. Most developed of the islands is Rab with 8 towns and villages and population of 10,000. Fishing and vineyards are main occupation of the 5000 people here.
